Tell Others About the Yi

What is an Advocate?

An advocate is one who pleads another's case or a person in support of something. Advocates of the Yi peoples will help bridge the gap between this people group and specific resources within the Kingdom of God. We hope that as an advocate for the Yi peoples you will particularly focus intense personal prayer upon their salvation as well as continually raise the awareness of others concerning the vast lostness of multitudes in this unreached people group. As an advocate for the Yi peoples you will focus attention on this people to learn about them and commit to pray about how church planting movements can emerge among them. You will network and partner with others to encourage their involvement as well.

Why Do the YI Peoples need Advocates?

Most unreached people groups, like the Yi peoples, live in difficult circumstances geographically, politically, and socially. It is, therefore, all the more essential that ministry in these circumstances is fine-tuned for the situation. The advocacy ministry has grown out of this reality.

Unreached peoples need advocates within the Kingdom learning about them, praying for them specifically, and calling for cooperation in loving and strategic initiative. For the Church, "out of sight" usually means "out of mind." Advocates can help bring the Yi peoples into the vision of the Church.

Advocacy means there is no such thing as a Closed Country

No people group is inaccessible today. Even though the Yi people live in communist China, advocates have ensured that work has continued to progress among the Yi. Advocates can help find access for long-term and short-term workers. While missionaries among the Yi are often quite restricted both on and off the field, advocates may work entirely outside of restricted areas, they can often operate very publicly and with few restrictions. As a trusted "front" for workers in the field, an advocate can support the field operations effectively.

What do Advocates do?

Advocates learn about two areas:

  • (1) about the people group, their culture, environment and current status,

  • (2) about the Kingdom resources: who is working with, or who could work with, the people group.

Each advocate will develop a unique network among Kingdom resources. Then advocates link the right resources with the right opportunities.

Advocates for the Yi seek God to build love in their hearts for the peoples in the various Yi people groups. One of the best ways to begin is regular prayer for the unreached people group. As an advocate prays, and encourages others to pray, God builds compassion

Types of Advocates:

FIELD-FOCUSED ADVOCATES - The focus revolves around overseas initiatives, helping established ministries cooperate strategically, doing cultural research, and filling specialized needs in the existing ministry. Short Term Prayer Walking and English Camp teams are two field-focused ministries needed right now among the Yi. For a more detailed list of needs, go to the "Opportunities" page.

RESOURCE-FOCUSED ADVOCATES - Resource-focused advocates work at home promoting the stories, needs, and opportunities of the Yi Peoples. You will help share newsletters with prayer updates, cultural information, needs and opportunities, or field reports. We are in need of Yi People Group Advocates and Prayer Coordinators in many areas, to see the full list of "Home Assignments", go to the "Opportunities" page.

An Advocate's Commitment to the Yi Peoples

Commitment to an unreached people group is the defining element of advocacy. Without this commitment there can be no advocate. God often uses the advocate's commitment to draw others into ministry among the advocate's chosen people group. Advocates commit to build bridge-relationships for cooperative ministry based on a healthy understanding of the people group.

If you accept this assignment to be a people group advocate for the Yi peoples, we encourage you to let us know about your commitment by writing us. We'll even send you an official Yi Peoples Advocate plaque.
